Refurbishment of the Herbarium, Department of Plant Sciences, Oxford University.
The project consisted of the complete refurbishment of the historic Fielding-Druce Herbarium of Plant Sciences for the University of Oxford.
The accomplishment involved protecting the valuable plant archive, refacing all existing storage units with new panelled oak doors and the construction of new cupboards, desks, shelving and drawer units to compliment. Ventilations systems were upgraded and new adaptable lighting installed throughout by the main contractor.
The completed project observed over 850 doors, presented in suited veneered series, with the aim of improving the storage environment for the collections, the working environment for its curators and researchers and to complete the Herbarium in a style and quality befitting it’s age and value.
Working in close tandem with award-winning Lee & Ross Architects of Oxford, a thorough understanding & implementation of the clients' requirements was ensured.
The success of the project is being monitored by other national collections as a possible prototype for their future refurbishment, and also features in the Royal Institute of British Architects; Architectural Review 2004.
